A PROPOSED RESOLUTION IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF
COLUMBIA
Councilmember Evans introduced the following resolution, which was retained by the
Council.
To declare the sense of the Council requesting that President George W. Bush appoint an
individual who is a resident of the District of Columbia and who has local ties to the
District of Columbia to the position of United States Attorney for the District of
Columbia.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the "Sense of the Council to Appoint a District of
Columbia Resident to the Position of United States Attorney for the District of Columbia
Resolution of 2001".
Sec. 2. The Council finds that:
(1) With the advent of a new Presidential Administration, it is
possible that the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia will be replaced.
(2) The Council has been impressed with the current United States
Attorney for the District of Columbia, Wilma Lewis, and recommends she be retained in her
current position.
(3) However, it has come to our attention that the new Administration
is considering replacing the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia with a
non-District of Columbia resident.
(4) The Council strongly opposes any appointment to United States
Attorney for the District of Columbia of an individual who does not currently live in the
District of Columbia and have strong local ties.
(5) The Council looks forward to a good working relationship with
President George W. Bush and views this issue as one that will impact on that
relationship.
Sec. 3. It is the sense of the Council that President George W. Bush
appoint a local resident who has local ties to the District of Columbia to the position of
United States Attorney for the District of Columbia.
Sec. 4. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of
publication in the District of Columbia Register.
