District of Columbia Neighborhoods
Developed by Mark David Richards, [email protected]
George Washington personally picked the site for the District of
Columbia, which was formerly part of Virginia and Maryland. Peter L’Enfant
designed DC. In the DC’s early history, it was composed of two cities
(Georgetown and Alexandria), two towns (Hamburg and Carrollsburg), and two
counties (Alexandria and Washington). Alexandria City and County were
merged back into Virginia in 1846, a few years before the slave trade was
forbidden in the District–perhaps foreshadowing the Civil War. On
February 21, 1871, the remaining jurisdictions were merged into one.
Today, DC is formed of nearly 120 neighborhoods. That which was once a
town or village is now a neighborhood.
